Charlie Callaghan Pursuit Race
July 7th, 2007
From its inception, the Cold Lake Sailing Club benefitted
from almost ten years of service and dedication of Charlie Callaghan, our committee boat operator.
A man of infinite patience and a sense of humour, Charlie was a fixture of the sailing club, providing
accurate timings and race starts throughout the season. Tragically, in January of 2000, Charlie Callaghan,
a retired RCAF service member and civil servant, passed away, and left a tremendous hole within the Cold Lake
Sailing Club. As any sailing club knows, a committee boat and dedicated race/timings coordinator are important
elements of any program. Compunding our loss was the friendship and spirit that Charlie brought to the club.
To commemorate Charlie, CLSC instituted a yearly Memorial Regatta. In 2002, it was decided to make the regatta
a pursuit race. In a departure from traditional mass starts, a pursuit race features a staggered start in
accordance with a boat's handicap. The slower boats start out first, with the faster racer class boats in pursuit.
In theory, all boats will cross the finish at the same time. The elongated course also adds to the excitement, and
takes advantage of our lake's immense size. In a nod to Charlie, the race doesn't require a time keeper!
